Staging the World: Spoils, Captives, and Representations in the Roman Triumphal Procession (Repost)
May 18 2012 / 09:52:49 PM
Staging the World is an illustrated study of the Roman triumphal procession in its capacity as spectacle and performance. Ida Ostenberg analyses how Rome presented and perceived the defeated on parade. Spoils, captives, and representations are the objects, and the basic questions to be asked concern both contents and context: What was displayed? How was it paraded? What was the response? The triumph was a crowded civic celebration, when spectators met with coins from Spain and Asia, Jewish temple treasures, silver plate and furniture from opulent royal feasts, trees from eastern gardens, Punic elephants appearing as in battle, kings, long known by name only, and ferocious barbarians dressed in outlandish costumes. Ostenberg aims to show what stories the Roman triumph told about the defeated and what ideas it transmitted about Rome itself.

Nano- and Micro-Mechanics of Polymer Blends and Composites
May 18 2012 / 09:28:31 PM
This book gives a state-of-art overview on aspects of micro- and nanomechanics of polymers, polymeric blends and composites. Major issues tackled are the following: experimental techniques to study the mechanical performance of polymer systems especially in respect with molecular, supermolecular and filler architectures on suitable model materials; prediction methods of the mechanical performance (short- and long-term properties); modeling tools and approaches. All these aspects are highlighted on polymeric systems of both academic and practical relevance. Contents: (I) Polymers. (II) Nanocomposites: Influence of Preparation. (III) Nano- and Microcomposites: Interphase. (IV) Nano- and Microcomposites: Characterization. (V) Nanocomposites: Modeling.
Geographies of Mobilities: Practices, Spaces, Subjects
May 18 2012 / 09:23:43 PM
Over the past fifteen years or so, there has been a widespread and increasing fascination with issues of mobility across the social sciences and humanities. Of course, geographers have always had an interest in mobility, but as yet have not viewed this in the same 'mobility turn' as in other disciplines where it has been used to critique the standard approaches to the subjects. This edited volume brings leading academics to provide a revitalised 'geography of Mobilities' informed by this wider 'mobility turn'. It makes connections between the seemingly disparate sub-disciplinary worlds such as migration, transport and tourism, suggesting that each has much to learn from each other through the ontological and epistemological concern for mobility. The book is divided into three sections. The first focuses on Mobile Practices - the experience and performance of mobility as something that is done, ranging from walking to flying. The second section examines mobile spaces; relatively fixed locales which enable mobility to occur such as roads, bridges and airports. The final section deals with mobile subjects, which includes tourist, refugee, commuter and migrant.
Mathematical Analysis
May 18 2012 / 09:23:40 PM
For the second edition of this very successful text, Professor Binmore has written two chapters on analysis in vector spaces. The discussion extends to the notion of the derivative of a vector function as a matrix and the use of second derivatives in classifying stationary points. Some necessary concepts from linear algebra are included where appropriate. The first edition contained numerous worked examples and an ample collection of exercises for all of which solutions were provided at the end of the book. The second edition retains this feature but in addition offers a set of problems for which no solutions are given. Teachers may find this a helpful innovation.
