RSPB Complete Birds of Britain & Europe
Additional illustrations reveal the characteristic appearance of each bird in flight, while "in situ" views portray a range of behaviours and habits. Similar-looking species and subspecies are also pictured, for comparison. In each species profile, key features are highlighted by annotation around each picture and further details of voice, nesting, feeding, migration, habitat, nomenclature, physical statistics, social grouping, behaviour, lifespan and conservation status are presented in jargon-free text. Distribution is shown in colour-coded maps. In addition to the main species, over 200 less common and peripheral birds are also illustrated and described, while a further 276 very rare and introduced species are concisely profiled.

ANZAC Infantryman 1914-1915.From New Guinea to Gallipoli (Osprey Warrior 155)
This title explores the recruitment, training, and combat experiences of the famous ANZAC infantry in the opening years of World War I. When war broke out in 1914, men rushed to the colours even before their governments had formally offered troops to Britain. The decision to employ the ANZACs in the Dardanelles came as a complete surprise, but the events at the Anzac and Suvla beach-heads quickly revealed the discipline and bravery of the men involved. This book takes a close look at day-to-day life in the trenches of Gallipoli, and explores how the wounded were treated. The experience of Gallipoli had a profound effect on its survivors, and it continues to mark the psyche of the two nations down to the present day.

The Pity of War: Explaining World War I by Niall Ferguson
The popular story of the First World War, however, was mostly written after WWII, against the backdrop of undeniable German evil and in the depths of the ideological muddle of the cold war. The story was straightforward: German aggression caused the war, but Gerry was no match for the superior spirit and logistics of the Allied forces, who willing suffered incomparable horrors of inhumanity while smashing the German threat.
With the fresh eyes of a young scholar and the preternatural skill of a gifted thinker, Niall Ferguson, who last year published the critically acclaimed The House of Rothschild, reassesses all of these assumptions and arrives at conclusions as to the war's causes, execution, and outcome that are at once radically new and convincingly modest.
Ferguson approaches his monumental task by asking ten fundamental questions, which he lays out plainly in the introduction:
[*] Was the war inevitable, whether because of militarism, imperialism, secret diplomacy or the arms race (Chapters 1-4)?
[*] Why did Germany's leaders gamble on war in 1914 (Chapter 5)?
[*] Why did Britain's leaders decide to intervene when war broke out on the Continent (Chapter 6)?
[*] Was the war, as is often asserted, really greeted with popular enthusiasm (Chapter 7)?
[*] Did propaganda, and especially the press, keep the war going, as Karl Kraus believed (Chapter 8)?
[*] Why did the huge economic superiority of the British Empire not suffice to inflict defeat on the Central Powers more quickly and without American intervention (Chapters 9 and 11)?
[*] Why did the military superiority of the German army fail to deliver victory over the British and French armies on the Western Front, as it delivered victory over Serbia, Rumania and Russia (Chapter 10)?
[*] Why did men keep fighting when, as the war poets tell us, conditions on the battlefield were so wretched (Chapter 12)?
[*] Why did men stop fighting (Chapter 13)?
[*] Who won the peace -- to be precise, who ended up paying for the war (Chapter 14)?
Since I have set Ferguson up as a contrarian, I should warn readers of this review against assuming obvious, contrarian answers to those questions. His analysis is thoughtful and his deductions soundly defended and rigorously footnoted: World War I was not inevitable, as history has told us; Britain, not Germany, was responsible for making it a world war; Britain prolonged the war through financial mismanagement, and Germany did its part in the stalemate by misusing its military superiority; the U.S. involvement decided not just the fate of the war but reorganized global power.
Ferguson knows he's on uncharted intellectual ground, so to keep the reader on course he leaves a constant trail of supporting notes and references, each drawn from a broad social and military analysis that spans from economics to popular culture. The notes and bibliography combine to fill almost 80 pages.
The Pity of War is not a chronology of the events of World War I. Those details are scarcely in dispute and Ferguson wants to illuminate history, not regurgitate it. Instead, The Pity of War explains the First World War to a new world, one stripped of cold war and anti-German orthodoxies that for decades clouded our understanding of the events of 1914-1918.

Nothing Less Than War: A New History of America's Entry into World War I
Description:
When war broke out in Europe in 1914, political leaders in the United States were swayed by popular opinion to remain neutral; yet less than three years later, the nation declared war on Germany. In Nothing Less Than War: A New History of America's Entry into World War I, Justus D. Doenecke examines the clash of opinions over the war during this transformative period and offers a fresh perspective on America's decision to enter World War I.
Doenecke reappraises the public and private diplomacy of President Woodrow Wilson and his closest advisors and explores in great depth the response of Congress to the war. He also investigates the debates that raged in the popular media and among citizen groups that sprang up across the country as the U.S. economy was threatened by European blockades and as Americans died on ships sunk by German U-boats.
The decision to engage in battle ultimately belonged to Wilson, but as Doenecke demonstrates, Wilson's choice was not made in isolation. Nothing Less Than War provides a comprehensive examination of America's internal political climate and its changing international role during the seminal period of 1914--1917.

Archaeological Practice in Great Britain Edition 1
As part of their training, archaeologists often seek work in parts of Britain, either for experience before travelling elsewhere, or directly as part of their career progression. While this does involve reading published material on excavation techniques, archaeological theory, and specific heritage management practices, or research using the Internet, the ideal preparation to working in Britain for the first time requires practitioners to know a little about a lot. Currently, there is no single resource which provides that primary resource for budding archaeologists.
Archaeological Practice in Great Britain will provide just such a resource: presented in an accessible style, with a comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography and lists of useful websites. Professionals with particular areas of expertise will contribute short sections on particular subjects, incorporated into the main text prepared by the authors. Throughout, the specific contexts and differences between the various component nations and regions of Great Britain will be made clear.

Bird Songs and Calls of Britain and Europe (4 CDs)
Unlike many of the former, this set eschews spoken introductions, in order to cram in as much useful material as possible. Rather than concentrating on just songbirds and their songs, the four volumes, cover, in turn, the calls of divers, grebes, petrels, herons, geese, ducks and raptors; then those of gamebirds, rails, bustards, waders, gulls, terns, pigeons and sandgrouse; plus the calls and songs of cuckoos, owls, nightjars, woodpeckers, larks, pipits, chats and hippolais warblers; and finally sylvia warblers, flycatchers, tits, shrikes, crows, sparrows, finches and buntings. For some species, such as Lapwing and Snipe, other sounds, made by the feathers during display flights, also feature.
In total, 396 species are heard (99 on each CD), including just about all the regular British breeding and migrant birds, plus much more besides. The only exceptions are the rarest vagrants, such as American waders, and those where one would expect there to be no available recording one can hardly complain at the lack of inclusion, of, say, the Eskimo Curlews or Slender-billed Curlews or Great Auk (though one could, of course bemoan the reasons for their absence, in a wider sense).
Species are listed in systematic order, based on Collins New Generation Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe (Perrins C., 1987).
Each track is necessarily short (most are between half- and one-minute), but a wealth of detail is packed into most of them. The Canada Goose (not one of our most musical birds, by any definition) has, in 44 seconds, "typical calls, calls of a pair, and small wintering flock", while the Grey Heron is allowed one minute fifteen seconds to give us "Calls in flight, greetings at the nest, sounds of a colony and calls of nestlings". Each disc last 74 minutes, apart from the second, which lasts 77.
Many individual sound recordists, including a number of familiar names, and the BBC Natural History Unit, are listed collectively for the set, but credits for individual tracks are not given. The sound quality is admirable, without the distracting changes in level and tone, which one might expect when so many sources and locations are involved . Roché has done all his colleagues proud, in that respect.
Interestingly, if the first disc is to be believed, Cuckoos are more common than one might otherwise expect; they are heard, somewhat incongruously, in the background of recordings as unlikely as those for the Black- throated Diver, Glossy Ibis and Pochard.
Contents:
Vol 1. Divers to Birds of Prey.
Vol 2. Gamebirds to Sandgrouse.
Vol 3. Cuckoos to Hippolais Warblers.
Vol 4. Sylvia Warblers to Buntings.

The American Phoenix: And Why China and Europe Will Struggle after the Coming Slump
2012 will bring another global economic crisis. It could have been avoided if America and other deficit countries had embarked on currency devaluation and tighter domestic policy to sustain recovery and growth, boost exports and savings, while cutting excessive debts built up in the pre-crisis 'gilded age'. But they didn't. Instead they continued to run large government deficits, effectively transferring debt from private to public hands, rather than reducing it through rising national savings rates.
Savings-rich countries, notably China, have not helped. To get the global economy in better balance they needed to reduce exports by revaluing their currencies and encouraging domestic demand. Instead, the second, third and fourth largest economies in the world have continued to increase their net exports, thwarting recovery in the United States, Britain and southern Europe. This economic imbalance, say Dumas and Choyleva, is going to cause another global economic crunch.
And afterwards? Perhaps surprisingly, but with impeccable reasoning, Dumas and Choyleva go on to argue that America will emerge from the slump in the strongest shape, China will struggle unless it takes steps to tackle its structural problems, Eurozone countries like Spain, Portugal and Greece are in for a depressing decade, while Britain, because of its labour market and exchange rate flexibility, will be in better shape to emulate America's recovery. These are precarious times. To understand and prepare for them, this book will be invaluable
